Does anyone else wish searching for a contact took less steps? Now you have to hit "contact" then tap in the "Search" bar to have the keyboard show up. Why not have the keyboard show up to start with? I know there's the other option to scroll through the alphabet along the side but having the keyboard appear right away seems like a more efficient option.

Not sure what you mean, the keyboard would only come up if you were searching for a contact and all the other functionality would still be there? You'd tab the Contacts icon, the search bar would come up with the keyboard at the bottom like it does after you tab in the search bar. You'd just be saving the step of having to tab before the keyboard appears.

40% of my screen and the underlying contacts are obscured by the keyboard I have no intention of using.
I completely disagree. I would find displaying the keyboard intrusive on my iPhone display the 99.9% of the time I don’t use the search capability.
