Running older OS on an M1 iMac & also running Windows software on it too!

Is it possible to connect & run an external drive with an older OS on it on my new iMac with M1 chip in it as a lot of my older software won't run on the new Mac which is very disappointing? I realise Boot camp doesn't exist any more, nor can I run the emulator Crossover to run Windows apps which is also driving me crazy. It seems I can't even use Rosetta to make the Crossover emulator work. I can't partition the hard drive to put an older OS on the iMac So I am just wondering what Apple is doing with this 'wonderful' new processor & iMac that makes it is so useless with a lot of software? I'm wishing I still had my old iMac as it was a lot more versatile than the new one! Any suggestions anyone? Thank you.

One cannot run Intel X86_64 compiled operating systems in a virtual machine on an Apple Silicon Mac. Virtualbox is not released for Apple Silicon Macs, and that leaves the subscription Parallels 18.* or VMware with the same operating system restrictions.

Microsoft has now said that they will support a released ARM Windows 11 on Apple Silicon Macs when using Parallel's Desktop, but the timeframe was left unclear.
