Technophobe new to Apple Music

Hi I’ve recently bought subscription for A.Music and also a smart speaker which is Alexa and Google compatible.

I want to get my Apple music right, from the start - but being a technophobe don’t know if I should be:

downloading (?)

adding to library

adding to playlist

as I don’t know the difference between them.

id be really grateful for your help - back in the day my iPod was full of my fav music (broken) and all I have are cd’s which I cannot play!

thank you for reading and I hope someone out there can provide answers in plain English (rather than technical 😆)
