Why does it help the battery to put charging on hold?

Gotcha, thanks for the answer. I wonder why 80% then? Why not 95%? Then at least it would be mostly full when I have to go mobile and need as long as possible. . .

Just like it is not a good idea to drain a battery completely, does not have to be charged completely to maintain longevity.

BHM is dynamic not static...

Rule of thumb—if you are near the mains leave it plugged in, if you need the portability run on battery only.

—BHM learns as it goes, and will make appropriate changes for long term battery health.

Battery Health Management (BHM) was introduced with Catalina 10.15.5 and only works on a Mac with a T2 chip or newer...

Thanks for the answer. But I still don't understand why it helps to hold it at 80%. Yes, you said that it doesn't have to be charged completely to maintain longevity. But why can't it charge to 95% or 99%? The main reason I'm asking is that sometimes I need to unplug it and be mobile, so I want it as full as possible. I don't want to start from 80%.

I have seen the hold anywhere between 72% on up... let the software work for you.

Let the Engineers worry about the the details or contact Apple Customer Support  (800) MY–APPLE (800–692–7753) and ask to speak to Engineering.

I would never advise to turn off BHM.

Simply charge to Full now if that is what you need.

You are overthinking it and making it an issue where there is none.

I would recommend just use the Mac as you see fit.
