All photos you are taking with the iPhone 11 will always have the aspect ratio of the sensor. When you change the aspect ratio in the Camera Settings, the Camera will save the original image in the device specific aspect ratio and add a cropped version in the aspect ratio you have set in the camera. So you can always revert to the aspect ratio of the sensor.

One problem with the linked shortcut - the resulting shortcut will scale down the image to a smaller number of pixels, but not change the aspect ratio - width to height, as long as the height is set to automatic, the aspect ratio will remain the same, only the resolution will be reduced. To get a different aspect ratio, for example from 4:3 to 16:9, we have to specify a new height manually, not automatic.

Well spotted léonie – thanks! ...I've since looked in several shortcut libraries and, surprisingly, didn't find a shortcut to change a photo's aspect ratio. 🤷♂️

A pity. I think, Yer_Man's's first suggestion to set the Camera to the aspect ratio we want, is still the best. To save storage with it, we have to save the photo, then reimport.
