iPhone Hijacking Facetime connection

For the last month or so, when I try to use face time calling from my Macbook Pro (OS 13.2.1), my iPhone 13 (iOS 16.3.1) grabs the microphone. I can hear the other party on the laptop speaker, but they cannot hear me at all. My phone displays the following message:

However, the iPhone is not on the Mac microphone list in system settings, and not an available setting in FaceTime. I cannot stop the iPhone from doing this, and can no longer use FaceTime calling (which is a central part of my workflow).

How do I get this to stop?

Hello jdrobnsn1,

Thanks for those additional details. To stop the continuity microphone from turning on, you can change the default microphone with these steps:

1. On your Mac, choose Apple menu > System Settings, then click Sound  in the sidebar. (You may need to scroll down.)
2. Select the built in mic in the list of sound input devices.

Use your iPhone as a webcam on Mac

If you want to just completely disable the continuity function, on the iPhone go to Settings > General > AirPlay & Handoff, and turn off the Continuity Camera option.

Cheers!

Hey jdrobnsn1,

Welcome to Apple Support Communities. We understand that you're having an issue with using FaceTime on your Mac. We'd like to help.

From what you've described, it sounds like this resource can help sort out the microphone use during FaceTime calls: Control access to the microphone on Mac - Apple Support

1. Choose Apple menu  > System Settings, then click Privacy & Security  in the sidebar. (You may need to scroll down.)
2. Click Microphone.
3. Turn access to the microphone on or off for each app in the list.

If you turn off access for an app, you’re asked to turn it on again the next time that app tries to use your microphone.

Note: The Recording Indicator light in Control Center shows when your computer’s microphone is in use or has been used recently. This light increases security and privacy on your Mac by letting you know if an app has access to the microphone.

Let us know if that helps.

Cheers!

No, that's not it. The procedure above refers to the Mac microphone. My problem is that when using the Mac, the iPhone grabs the audio connection with the notice above. I cannot use the Mac microphone at all. After about 5 seconds, the call gets disconnected. The notice says that I can remove the phone from the Mac Mic list, but it is not on there to begin with, so I cannot remove it.

This is terribly frustrating (thanks for listening to me whine).
