Canon Elura 100 mini dv which adapters work

I cannot get my old elura 100mini Dv-cam to be recognized using the dv output to firewire 400 then firewire 400 to usb and then usb to thunderbolt on Macbook Pro M-1 running Ventura 13.3.1. An earlier thread in 2021 had mentioned adapters that got the canon elura 100 to be seen maybe not on imovie but was able to see it and import old using quicktime. Any suggestions.

Yes, I have done a test by recording a minute or so of the DVcam footage to the 2.0 gigabyte SD card within the Canon Elura 100. I took the SD card out and thru an adaptor got the SD card to show up on the desktop of my 2020 laptop M1 running Ventura 13.3.1. I was able to play it in Quicktime where I see it is an AVI file. I then opened iMovie 10 and was able to import the AVI file into Events in the iMovie Library! Now I have to figure out if I can find that Event clip and copy/save it to my external hardrive where my main iMovie Library resides. Or should I just copy the AVI clips to a folder to work with them later. And of course I have to refresh my vague memories of editing to a project in iMovie 10. I did most of my editing years ago in iMovie 9 which to me was easier ! Thanks for all your help. I will update later when I see if I can get a DV video from the USB output on the Canon 100 which is used to transfer analog to digital pass thru or to print still images.

Here's a link from the Canon support site re transferring from a Canon Elura 100 to a computer.

A couple of things may help, like togging the camera on and off, and starting the camera running before beginning import.

Sometimes, though, it just doesn't work. Importing from mini dv can be hit or miss.

You might want to post on the Sony forum for more input.

I changed the cable and adaptors from my Canon Elura 100 DVcam to DV to Firewire 800 + apple adapter 800 to thunderbolt + apple adapter thunderbolt to Lighning USB-c and cannot get my camera to show up in iMovie 10.3.5 on my MacBook Pro running Ventura 13.3.1. Also tried Quicktime Movie recording but still does not recognize the camera. I have read all the links and Apple support community and Canon support to no avail. Restarted computer, deleted iMovie preferences, turned off camera, started imovie before plugging in or turning on camera, started camera before opening iMovie, same with QTP. Any suggestions or other input from the community would be great.

Have you tried downloading to an SD card, if that's possible with your camera? Then insert the SD card into your Mac.

Yes, iMovie 9 was much more reliable than iMovie 10 for importing DV from an external camera.

I don't know if this will work, but you might be able to create a partition on your Mac and download Yosemite onto it, and then download iMovie 9 into it. Here's a list of downloadable OS dmg's, one of which is for Yosemite:

How to download macOS - Apple Support

As I say, I haven't tried the above procedure, but thought I'd raise the possibility. Of course, if your Mac still won't recognize the camera, then you would have to resort to an older computer that is running Yosemite or older.

Great. Glad you got it working. The .avi format is a legacy format that is not compatible with iMovie running on Catalina and newer. So you might want to convert the .avi clips to Mp4/AAC that iMovie likes. You can do that with the free download, Handbrake.

You can get Handbrake here:

https://handbrake.fr/

A simple way to do it is to open Handbrake and do a File/Open Source. Navigate to your video and choose it as the source from the resulting screen. Then do File/Start Encoding. Wait a couple of minutes for the conversion to

complete. Then save and import the converted clip into iMovie.
