I had experienced the exact same thing on my iPad just 4 days ago. My iPad is the iPad Air 4th Generation. Same thing had happened to me. The iPad shutdown in the middle of an active app. 60% of battery charge was left on it. Force Restart and plugging it to my app did nothing. It was out of warranty as well by 3 months. I knew, at that point, that it was a hardware issue and probably something with the logic board. Took it to the Apple Store and it was determined a hardware failure as well and the cost of replacement was the cost of a new iPad. I didn’t want to pay that much ($419+)

I then elected to take it to a third-party repair shop (a non-Apple Authorized repair shop) which used genuine Apple parts and they fixed it within 24 hours. Apparently there was a short in the logic board as suspected. The repair was completed successfully for $119.

I recommend that you begin by having your iPad examined at the Apple Store or at an Authorized Service Center for diagnosis and then make a decision. You may also start with 👉 Official Apple Support

If your iPad is unresponsive, connect your iPad to its Power Adapter and allow the iPad to charge undisturbed for at least an hour. Then, while still connected to external power, try a forced-restart:

Force restart iPad (models with Face ID or with Touch ID in the top button)

If your iPad doesn’t have the Home button, do the following:

  1. Press and quickly release the volume button nearest to the top button.
  2. Press and quickly release the volume button farthest from the top button.
  3. Press and hold the top button.
  4. When the Apple logo appears, release the top button.

Force restart iPad (models with the Home button)

Press and hold the top button and the Home button at the same time. When the Apple logo appears, release both buttons.

If iPad still doesn’t turn on, or if it gets stuck during start up, see the Apple Support article If your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch won’t turn on or is frozen. Or if your iPad isn’t working correctly after you restart it, see the iPad Support website.

If you continue to experience difficulties, you will need to seek assistance directly from from Apple Support.
