I turned on my iMAC, which loaded without any problem, but when I tried to login there was no responce. I rebooted 2 more times with any improvment noted. Has anyone else experenced this?

What happens if you boot into Safe Mode?

Do you have a complete and current backup? (If not, then getting a backup is your highest priority. Not testing or verification or troubleshooting or diagnostics of any task other than trying to archive your data.)
