Can someone tell me what’s on the top left hand part of my iPhone screen?

it’s the black square with white circle, it appears and disappears on my screen and if I’m typing and hit it, the application closes down .

That is Assistive Touch. Please see the pic below which shows how to enable it. You need to disable it.

The pic below is enabling you may diable it.
