Some iPhone calls go straight to voicemail

Only 3 people can call me and my phone rings; all other calls go straight to voice mail. It doesn't matter if the caller is in my favorites or in my contact list. I did have a call blocking program to block telemarketers but I did remove it. None of the callers are on my block list. I have no focus settings that would limit my calls at specific times. My software is up to date and I have removed apps that I don't use. I went to my phone carrier to troubleshoot the problem. They removed my sim card, put it in another phone and their call went straight to voicemail. They replaced my sim card and my phone still sends calls straight to voicemail. I have perform a backup, erased my phone and re-install from the backup. The problem still exist. One option suggested is to erase my phone and not restore from a backup. However, I will loose all my contacts, calendar appointments as well as any files that have. Music and photos can be recovered from my laptop. Any suggestion to correct this problem will be appreciated.

The problem has been resolve. I am disappointment with the Apple Community for not being able provide me with a solution. I spent a large amount of time to resolving the problem without success. My thought was that the call blocker program had residual program elements that remained active in the memory. So I attempted to overwrite the memory by completely filling it with a video file. Didn't work. My next thought was that what ever was causing my phone to miss calls was in my backup files. So I reset my phone and did not restore it. That didn't work. My next step was to call my carrier, AT&T and seek assistance. I was reluctant since I already went to my local AT&T store to try to solve the problem without success. I was instructed to install an app named Active Armor. After setup, I was able to go to the call routing section and change the settings that sent all unknown callers to voicemail. Success!! So I am sharing my solution with the community so others with the same problem can be resolved. Please post your results so I know I have been helpful. Thank You

FIRST: Are there missed calls in Phone/Recents on the phone? If they are not the problem is in the network, because the calls aren’t getting to your phone. Contact your carrier:

  • check with your carrier that they don’t have a local outage, and that you didn’t have any settings that would have immediately invoked voicemail, such as call forwarding.
  • check up on them at Down Detector - Crowdsourced outage checker

If they are in Recents here’s what to check:

  • Check the MUTE switch on the left side of the phone, above the volume buttons. It should be towards the screen
  • Check the volume setting. With the Home screen displayed, press the VOLUME UP button on the left side of the phone. It’s above the VOLUME DOWN button.
  • Go to Settings/Phone. There’s a switch for Silence Unknown Callers. If it is on any calls from numbers not in your contacts will go directly to voicemail.
  • Also in Settings/Phone: Make sure Call Forwarding is off.
  • iOS 14 & older: Go to Settings/Do not Disturb. Turn it off if it is on. Also turn off Scheduled. With both off none of the other switches there matter.
  • iOS 15: Go to Settings/Focus, and verify that all focus settings are disabled.
  • iOS 16: Open the Control Center and turn off Focus.
  • Go to Settings/Sounds & Haptics. Make sure there is a sound assigned to Ringtone.
  • Go to Settings/Accessibility/Touch/Call Audio Routing and make sure Auto-Answer Calls is off.
  • Go to Settings/Screen Time/Communications Limits. Tap each of the 2 entries and make sure both are “Everyone"
  • Restart your phone-->Restart your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch - Apple Support
  • If all else fails, talk your carrier into replacing your SIM card (thanks to ASC user DShelbyD)

I have the same problem. I followed all the trouble shooting steps, and only one this person calls does it go straight to voicemail. How did you fix the problem, would love to try it as a last resort.

Did you ever have an app called Robokiller? It diverts all of your calls to their server to screen them, and deleting the app does not change the divert function.

The DND would affect all calls and there are no Focus settings

BedTime Function is not on my phone

Both volume and ringer volume is up

The ringer switch is on

The audio routing is not an issue since some calls do ring

Auto Answer Calls is not an option on my phone

No Bluetooth Audio device is connected

Headset Mode operates normal (when headset unplug phone speakers work)

Since you are at level 10, I'm wondering if you could answer some questions about the iPhone? If I completely erased the memory would the phone power up. Is the power up software in the firmware or in the main memory? I'm looking to see about getting a memory erasing program, (military grade) to erase the memory with no residual programs. Generally, when you delete a program only the first part is changed to cause the MBR not able to locate the program. Apparently, the call blocking program I deleted has some residual software that causes the phone block calls.

Another option I have thought of is to load my phone completely with apps to over write the memory location the call blocking program was.

The final option would be to download any photos I want to save, make sure I have written down all contacts numbers, music comes from my computer, write down any notes, and all accounts and passwords on my phone, then erase my phone and reinstall all apps and contacts, accounts passwords etc. Not from a backup file.

I'm running out of options on this. Don't like missing important calls even when they are in my contacts or favorites but I also don't like telemarketers calling me 8 times a day to sell me Medicare supplement insurance. Any ideas on resolving this problem would be appreciated.
