iPad issue after iPadOS 16.4 attempted update

Anyone share similar issues below after the release of the latest iPadOS?

My iPad Pro started to crash (backlit black screen) after the iPadOS update in late March. When attempted to update or reset the iPad, there were inconsistency in its turning on-off response, inability to respond to reset when connect to a Mac, etc.

More details if interested:

When I took it to the Apple store in late March, it magically turned on and nothing abnormal showed up during the Apple Genius's diagnostic scan. The Apple Genius also told me that my iPad battery health (2019) was at 94% - so pretty decent - with no hardware issue/malfunction detected.

The next day, it would not turned on again. Then the day after it turned on by itself.

This week, same thing. I have an online chat session with an Apple Rep, who assisted me to run a diagnostic on my iPad. No issue on the diagnostics, so I was told that it may be a corrupted file on my iPad as there should not be any hardware issue. However, the iPad just would not respond to my Mac when we tried to reset it factory setting.

This evening, it turned on by itself again (after zero response for two days). When I checked the software update, it needed another update. When I tried to update the iPad, it crashed again. Once more, it did not respond to any connection to my Mac for reset. (Already checked the cable; it charges the iPad fine when the iPad was responsive; my Mac is also running fine.)

  • It is highly unlikely that the iPadOS update has anything directly to do with the power failures that you have been experiencing lately on your iPad Pro. If it were so, then there would have been plenty of other incidents that would have created news and posts all over the tech industry by now.
  • This does not appear to be a software issue. Your iPad Pro is actually shutting down and losing power and then unable to turn on using the Power button. Once power is OFF, then the iPad must turn ON first before software is engaged.
  • I believe that what you may be experiencing is an intermittent hardware issue and specifically with the PMIC (Power Management Integrated Circuit). The function of the Power Management IC is to manage distribute and Supply Power voltage from the battery source to other corresponding circuits or chips. This is probably happening on your iPad on an intermittent basis and that is why it works sometimes and then it doesn’t for days. There is a failing component on the PMIC. Hardware diagnostics passed when conducted by Apple, because the PMIC was functioning during those times. Of course, when the PMIC does not function then you are experiencing long shut downs and diagnostics cannot be performed during that time.
  • I cannot explain why your iPad Pro does not appear on your Mac when it is connected to it. There are entire different sets of reasons for this. Ensure that you are connecting to your Mac when the iPad is in the ON state and working and before it shuts down again.

Is your iPad Pro out of Apple Warranty now? If YES, then I recommend that you have it examined at a reputable third party repair shop in your area and get a repair estimate. Then take things from there.

Thank you Axel for your speedy response! I think my post wasn't clear that the problem with it "not turning on" is that it will just get a black screen (backlit), so I'm uncertain if the problem is with the PMIC (since the screen can turn on).

Since your post, I went on to search on iPad black screen, then I found out apparently my iPad was stuck in the infamous "iPad black screen of death" and other shared similar experiences -_-"

After a few tips from websites and YouTube, the iPad can be turned back on fine, but it just won't let me reset it to factory setting, which I really want to do to eliminate any software issues. Also, it just keeps on having problem of not completing the update on the latest iPadOS (16.4.1).

Assuming that the iPad will power-on as expected - and that you can successfully enter your Passcode - you should be able to completely reset your iPad from iPad settings:

Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPad > Erase All Content & Settings

You should note that while this reset will fully erase the iPad - this is not a Factory Restore/reset. For this, you’ll need to use a Windows PC (with iTunes for Windows installed) or a Mac computer (with iTunes or Finder - as appropriate for the installed version of macOS):

Restore your iPhone, iPad, or iPod to factory settings - Apple Support

The Factory Restore not only erases all data and settings - but also installs a fresh/clean copy of the most recent version of iOS/iPadOS that is supported by the iPad.
