Prevent Podcast Queueing

Is there a way to prevent the Podcast app from queueing up the next thing it wants to play? I would prefer that it would go to “not playing.” Most of the time, the app chooses something I don’t want. If I navigate away from what the app chose, it marks the episode as “played.” I don’t want that either. If I can’t resolve this, I’ll probably find a different app to play podcasts.
