iTunes on PC

I am having a problem with iTunes (Version 12.12.8.2). Running on Windows 10 laptop .

When I go to EDIT, PREFERENCES, ADVANCED in iTunes, I am trying to change the path from C Drive to my external D drive, as my C drive is not big enough to hold all my music, which is why I am trying to use my external hard drive (D Drive) in iTunes. However after selecting the external D drive and closing iTunes, when I reopen and go to EDIT, PREFERENCES, ADVANCED, it has reverted back to C Drive. I have also downloaded iTunes on another laptop (Windows 10) but still the same issue!

Also the other problem is when I try to consolidate library in iTunes by going to FILE-LIBRARY-ORGANISE LIBRARY. I click on "consolidate files". But when I close this box and click on this again "consolidate files! is unticked! Even after restart!

Can anyone help me please?

There is a bug that, at least for some users, seems to stop the media folder preference from being saved properly. See Make a split library portable - Apple Community and put your library in a shape that isn't affected by the issue, and is easier to backup and move around in future.

Consolidate files is a one time operation rather than a continuous process. The option Copy files to iTunes Media folder when adding to the library is the one that acts on new additions to the library. Consolidating is what you might do if you've changed the media folder, or have previously had Copy files... turned off and now want everything gathered up into the one media folder.

The issue of iTunes reverting back to the C Drive has been ongoing for quite a while. It does not appear to be high on Apple's list of priorities to be fixed. The solution (that I use) is that whenever I want to import from CD into iTunes, I change the setting to the drive and folder that I want - if I remember! I frequently forget and have to cancel the import and start again.

But therein lies the point: that preference only determines where future imports from CD are placed (and I assume, purchases from the iTunes Store). It does not move your existing files and it makes no difference to purchases of music from other online sources such as Amazon, Bandcamp and Betaport. When you obtain music from those sources, you place the files in the folder you want and then tell iTunes where the files are located.

I don't use consolidate files personally. One thing though: do not move files from their original location once you have told iTunes where they are. If you do, iTunes will lose track of them and be unable to play the songs or copy them to your devices.

Hey, i think this may be the answer. Once opened, choose the Itunes Media Location to where you want it, D:

Maybe check box the Keep Itunes Media Folder Organized and Copy Files To Itunes Media Folder.

Spot check some songs during this process on the right click "song info" to see how scattered they are.

Then File > Library > Consolidate Files. It might ask you a question i forget but I'm sure it'll make sense once you see it.

I've been having this trouble too, i think this way works, so far.
