AirPods Pro 2 and iPhone 14 pro max - piano/classical music sounds like fireworks popping.

Hi all, just purchased some AirPods Pro 2s. Sound was excellent until I tried various classical songs.

when listening to piano music, it sounds like the audio quality is poor and you get more hiss/noise but when piano notes are played you get what I can only describe as a background noise like a firework exploding.

when I put on music that has more going on then I don’t hear this and the music sounds fine. Just seems to be on soft music where not a lot other than a piano etc is being played.

have tried Apple Music but also tried on other platforms such as YouTube and same issue.

playing direct through phone the noise disappears. Only hear it through headphones.

any ideas?

thanks

Hi Daveyboy1234,

Just to make sure this issue is with the AirPods and not the recordings you're listening to, lets try to adjust settings in Apple Music.

Make sure the tracks you're listening to offer High Quality or Lossless quality and make sure it's enabled:

Listen to lossless music on iPhone

Next, try to set the EQ to see if that produces a better result for you as well:

Change the way music sounds on iPhone

Let us know if that helps.

Hi, thank you for your reply.

unfortunately, this does not help.

I have tried everything I can think of. Removed AirPods from phone and re added again. I have checked the sound settings and these are all ok and high quality etc.

my partner has also just purchased the same headphones and she has the same sound on hers as I do. As I say, only noticeable on things like classical music where just a piano is playing etc. but through both our pairs and both phones etc we both get the sound like a firework exploding softly when a piano key is pressed. Very offputting.

I have even just updated AirPod firmware to latest which came out a day or two ago but again not helped.

tried with noise cancellation on and off as well as all noise modes off but still same noise.

is it the fact that the sound is transferred by lossy Bluetooth and it’s this which is causing it? When I turn off AirPod and listen through phone directly, the sound is not present.

thank you for your help. However, the fact it’s happening on two pairs with iphone 14 pro max makes me think it’s a combination of those. Is the Bluetooth quality really bad on this combination or something?

has anyone else noticed this? I can only really tell on classical music (solo piano is best way to test). I first thought it was my pair of headphones as it sounds awful and you cannot unhear it as every press of a piano key results in what can only be described as a firework going off.

thanks again
