keyboard not working after 13.3.1 update 7 April 2023

Curiously, after the recent security update, my Apple keyboard (~5 years old) abruptly stopped being recognized by my 2017 iMac. It also was now dead to my wife's mac. Borrowing her keyboard, I was able to get the update of my Mac to complete. Out of curiosity, I pig-tailed my defunct keyboard thru the USB port on her keyboard now attached to my Mac and found that in this configuration my assassinated keyboard worked normally! (Imagine my surprise!) Having by now having purchased a replacement, my question is academic, but I'm am very very curious as to how a security OS update can zap my keyboard (and am I at risk of having this happen again with the next update?!)

From other's experiences reported, 13.3 keyboard issues from 2020 and now with 13.3.1 is no longer a "coincidence" but a pattern. With Apple, we appear to be moving into an era of an increased "buyer beware" caveat emptor, "common law doctrine that places the burden on buyers to reasonably examine property before making a purchase. A buyer who fails to meet this burden is unable to recover for defects in the product that would have been discovered had this burden been met." Alas, it would seem we are out in the cold with OS update risks unless AppleCare happens to be in force.

Curiously, on my wild goose chase to "fix" my issue with Google Maps Pro, I bit my lip and chanced another downloaded install of 13.3.1, risking the loss of another keyboard. To my relief, I escaped the evil demon and kept my keyboard! The potential variables exceed my mental capacity, however I will view future update offerings with a much more critical eye!!!

Just to update, I think the 13.3.1 update might have fried the keyboard.

The warranty service will change the top case of the M1 air. Apple diagnostic doesn't point any hardware fault and the keyboard doesn't work even after a full reset and macOS install done by their service rep.

It's very strange that the keyboard was working in the moment I hit update and was already dead on login prompt after reboot. The software might have killed the controller or something, Idk.

Now what? Already disabled gadgets automatic update and will stay where it works. Lucky me it is covered.
