AddressBookSourceSync

AddressBookSourceSync is taking up a lot of my iMac memory. I've quit the process but it comes back on. Here's a screen shot:

What's going on? (Man, how I wish I had upped my memory when I bought this--no way to add on now. Miss my former iMac that I added on memory myself, AND had a CD slot to easily copy music.)

You may have some damaged temporary system cache and/or swap files.

Give this a try: boot into Safe Mode according to How to use safe mode on your Mac and test to see if the problem persists. Reboot normally and test again.

NOTE 1: Safe Mode boot can take up to 3 - 5 minutes as it's doing the following;

• Verifies your startup disk and attempts to repair directory issues, if needed

• Loads only required kernel extensions (prevents 3rd party kernel/extensions from loading)

• Prevents Startup Items and Login Items from opening automatically

• Disables user-installed fonts

• Deletes font caches, kernel cache, and other system cache files

NOTE 2: if you have a wireless keyboard with rechargeable batteries connect it with its charging cable before booting into Safe Mode. This makes it act as a wired keyboard as will insure a successful boot into Safe Mode.

Sounds like you solved the problem of AddressBookSourceSync running out of control. Solutions to the problems include:

  • Shutting off Contacts iCloud sync (like you did)
  • Signing out of iCloud
  • Restart and sign back into iCloud

Normal operation for AddressBookSourceSync is to run for a short time when Contacts is opened or information from Contacts is be accessed to another app with your permission. I would also expect it to run periodically throughout the day for short periods. When you turn iCloud sync back on, does the problem return or does it go back to normal operation?

Not sure of the processes that run with the Brave browser. You could always uninstall by using their instructions and test again. It could be normal behavior by the Brave browser if performance is not affected.

Howdy smartblondegirl,

It sounds like there is a process using up alot of system memory. We know how important having a working computer is for you, and you’re in the right place for answers.

The first thing to try is to check for a software update for your computer: Update macOS on Mac - Apple Support

If the computer is running the latest macOS, then please let us know how much disk storage space is available. Choose Apple menu  > System Settings, click General in the sidebar, then click Storage on the right.

Take Care!
