Mail "Save Attachments" greyed out?

Mail "Save Attachments" is greyed out on many messages. Group selecting to save multiple messages results in just one of more than 100 images being saved.

Hi SeanNWT,

Great job narrowing it down to only emails with attachments that do not display the paperclip icon.

You might also check your Download Attachment settings in Mail to see which, if any, of your attachments are being downloaded. You may need to ensure the attachments are downloaded first.

Change Account Information settings in Mail on Mac - Apple Support

To change these settings in the Mail app  on your Mac, choose Mail > Settings, click Accounts, then click Account Information.

Download Attachments
Mail always downloads media attachments (such as image, PDF, video, or audio files) that you receive.
To have Mail automatically download other types of attachments (such as spreadsheets or zipped files), click the pop-up menu, then choose an option:
- All: Mail always downloads these attachments.
- Recent: Mail downloads only attachments of this type received within the past 15 months.
- None: Mail doesn’t download any of these attachments.
Mail downloads attachments you receive to a special folder in your home Library folder.

If this doesn't resolve your inability to save attachments, have you noticed any similarities in the emails or attachments that do not have the paperclip icon? For example, were they received before or after a single date, from a specific account, or over a certain size?

Kindest Regards.

Hello SeanNWT,

To help us get a better understanding of the issue, we’d like to ask a few questions.

1. Does the issue only happen when multiple messages are selected?

2. Do you receive a specific error when this happens, or is "Save Attachments" grayed out only?

3. Were any changes made to your device or settings before this started? If so, what changes were made?

That information will help us plan how to proceed.

Please also check out the information in this link, to ensure the correct process is being used to save email attachments, so we can make sure there aren't any issues there: View, save, or delete email attachments in Mail on Mac

Save email attachments

1. In the Mail app  on your Mac, move the pointer over the header of a message.
2. Click the Attach button  that appears, click the name of an attachment or choose Save All, then choose a location.
3. You can also select a message, then choose File > Save Attachments. Or drag an attachment from the message to the desktop to save it there.
4. Click Save.

Email attachments are saved in the Downloads folder, available in the Dock. To specify a different location, choose Mail > Preferences, click General, then select a folder.

Thanks!

  1. No, it happens with single or multiple messages. Of course, with single messages, there are other reasonable alternatives.
  2. No error, just can't access the function.
  3. No changes I'm aware of. Have tried re-start, etc.
  4. Here's something I just discovered: It appears that it works on some emails, but not others, and the ones it works on have the paper clip icon in the preview (and yes, before you think I'm a complete idiot, the other ones HAVE attachments, they're just not showing the paper clip in the preview) In the attached image, there should be a paper clip beside the size of the email, but there is not. There is a paper clip there in the emails in which "Save Attachments" is not grayed out.
