compatibility iphone xr with watch series 8

Is iPhone XR compatible with Series 8 for cellular service? I was told by my carrier that it is not, but Apple says it is.

If you have an Apple Watch with cellular the watch and your iPhone function independently for cellular service. The watch has to be configured onto the cellular account which hosts your iPhone, but it is a standalone additional device with its own eSIM. Please be aware not all networks support cellular for Apple Watch so this might be the reason they don’t like it. See Apple Watch - Carriers - Apple for details of which networks support Apple Watch cellular.

Also be aware the above only refers to the standalone cellular function of Apple Watch. When the watch and your paired iPhone are within Bluetooth range the watch will shut down its cellular function and pass all traffic through your iPhone. This is completely invisible to your network/carrier and will always work provided the iPhone has a cellular or WiFi signal to reach the outside world.
