iCloud-to-iCloud email security

Is email sent from one iCloud account (say, on an iPad) to another iCloud account (say, on a Mac) encrypted end-to-end? I.e., this does NOT use the “global email system”, does it?

For information on iCloud email security, see the following from: iCloud data security overview - Apple Support

iCloud Mail does not use end-to-end encryption because of the need to interoperate with the global email system. All native Apple email clients support optional S/MIME for message encryption.

That same support article states that it is encrypted in transit and on server.
