My system data is 440GB and growing, should I be concerned?

Hi there,

My 1TB Macbook Pro M1 Pro says that it has 440 GB of System Data - which I am unable to break down to see the files that are contributing to this huge amount of space.

  1. What exactly does System Data refer to and where can I find the files?
  2. Are there any tips / tricks to removing System Data storage?

Thanks for your help,

Ash

That's not good. A lot of times it's just random stuff that collects and should be purged but isn't. But a good deal of that could be stuff that you might need. Did you see what "Manage" indicates?

It's kind of a drastic step, but it might be possible to back up, reset MacOS to factory condition, and then restore from the backup. If there's some sort of bloat to the "System Data" then that usually won't be in the backup.
