Apple TV 4K with HD TV

Will the Apple TV 4K be able to use a HD TV which has 1080p screen? Or will it just ignore it?

No 4K option Hi! I just upgraded my Apple TV 4K 1st gen to 3rd gen. Everything works perfectly with my old Apple TV but not my new one that doesn’t show 4K HDR or SDR as a resolution option. The highest available is 1080. Also there is no option to check my hdmi cable and it’s not possible to change chrominans from 4:2:2, which is strange to me since 4:2:0 is a less complicated setting.. frustrated!
