Using older Wacom tablet on MacStudio

Hi, I have and old Wacom Intous 3 XL tablet which is perfectly OK for me.

Wacom official driver no longer support older tablet models and the old driver don't work on newer MacOS.

The tablet itself will work, you can move the cursor, do the clicks, just you cannot set the monitor mapping, button settings... etc.

If I Install official driver, the driver won't recognise the tablet.

I have the same problem with iMac 2017 and later with MacMini M1 and I was able to solve with patched driver from https://github.com/thenickdude/wacom-driver-fix

Now I have upgraded to MacStudio and I cannot get the tablet to work normally. If I don't have drivers on the system, then basic functions works - including clicks - but not mapping. If I install this driver other things works, but clicking is not working at all (button or pen tap).

I even tried copying files directly from a iMac (also with latest Ventura) and it didn't help. (On the iMac it works normally).

Any suggestion?

Mac Studio, macOS 13.3

It seems Wacom is not updating its drivers for older tablets to push us to buy new ones. Very bad policy …

Fortunately, I happened to find an awesome solution app that solves the issue.

https://apps.apple.com/us/app/connect-my-tablet/id1352696344?mt=12

It installs a customized version of the driver. While the process is a bit cumbersome (it takes a good 20 minutes), it does magically work! My old Intuos 4 now works like a charm on MacOS 13 Ventura

VikingOSx is right: using a driver not compatible with MacOS Ventura can be risky. However, the patched driver of Thenickdude "wacom-driver-fix" is compatible with MacOS Ventura. This patch fixes bugs that prevent older Wacom tablet drivers from running on MacOS Catalina, Big Sur, Monterey and now MacOS 13 Ventura.

I hope I helped you!

Yes I had no problem with this driver in MacMini M1 and also not in iMac 2017 with Ventura.

But it is not working on this newer MacStudio and I am not able to find a solution how to fix it.

It clearly works ok with M1 mac and also on Ventura... might be something specific to my system (some software conflict), but I tried a lot of things without any success...

Hi!

I searched a bit and couldn’t find any drivers beyond what you have already tried.

The only solution that came to my mind was to download a Windows 10 virtual machine and download an original Wacom driver for your tablet from there.

Here is a general guide on how to install a virtual machine with Windows 10 on your Mac:

1) Download virtualization software like virtualbox or VMware Fusion and install it on your Mac.

2) Download an ISO image of Windows 10 from the Microsoft website.

3) Launch the virtualization software and create a new virtual machine by following the instructions provided by the program.

4) When creating the virtual machine, select the Windows 10 ISO image as the boot disk.

5) Follow the instructions to complete the installation of Windows 10 on the virtual machine.

6) Once the installation is complete, launch the virtual machine and sign in to Windows 10.

7) Download and install the driver for your Wacom Intous 3 XL tablet from the Wacom website.

Please note that this is only a general guide and there may be additional steps or settings specific to your system. Also, make sure you have a valid license to use Windows 10 in your virtual machine. To get it you can buy it from the Microsoft website or an authorized reseller. Once you have purchased the license, you will receive a product key that you can use to activate your copy of Windows 10 during installation or later from Windows settings. Make sure you purchase a valid license for the version of Windows 10 that you intend to use in your virtual machine.

After creating and configuring the virtual machine with Windows 10, you can start it by opening the virtualization software you used (virtualbox or VMware Fusion) and selecting the virtual machine from the list of available virtual machines. Then, click the "Start" or "Run" button to start the virtual machine. Once started, you will see the Windows 10 Startup screen and you will be able to log in as you normally would on a computer with Windows 10 installed.

To exit the virtual machine with Windows 10, you can simply shut down Windows 10 as you normally would on a computer with Windows 10 installed. Alternatively, you can also use the virtualization software menu to stop or suspend the virtual machine. Make sure you save all your work before exiting the virtual machine.

You can download the driver for your Wacom Intous 3 XL tablet from the Wacom website at the driver page: https://www.wacom.com/it-it/support/product-support/drivers. Make sure you select the correct driver version for your operating system and tablet model.

I hope I helped you!

Hi, thanks for the one possible solution, but I am really not too keen on using virtual machine, just for this. I might even purchase some cheaper (non Wacom) tablet instead...

Anyway I am quite certain that there is somehow a possibility for this tablet to work on my mac studio. This patched driver works with M1 macs, it works with Ventura OS, so it might me something specific to my system.

I will see if somebody else have any other solution, otherwise I might even try to reinstall OS from backup to see if it will help...
