Serial Number Changed After Genius Bar Repair

So I damaged the back of my 12 Pro Max & brought it into apple for repair. My phone was under AppleCare+ so the whole process was pretty seamless & pleasant. I got the phone back in less than an hour and everything appeared to check out so I left & went about my day. Upon returning home, once I started to set the phone back up and reinserted my sim card I started to notice some weird things. First being that my sim card no longer worked on the device, & also that both my serial and IMEI numbers were no longer the same as before. Also when I'm connected to my iMac I now have two phones popping up in my devices as if they're completely separate phones. I know some carriers link your IMEI to your phones sim so I kind of get why the sim might not be working. But my question is why did the serial numbers change? Does this mean I have a different phone than before and the apple rep forgot to mention it or did they swap on a new rear glass and because of that the numbers are different. Its all just kind of odd to me.

They should have told you that, but often they just do complete replacements in lieu of repairing an actual device. I'm sure that's pretty much the only way they would handle case damage. Then they'll evaluate the exchanged device for whatever parts can be reused to make refurbished devices.

Did you back up and then wipe before you brought it in? I should be pretty obvious if it's a replacement device, because the model number should start with an N. A device that was sold as a new retail device will have a model number that starts with N. That's in Settings > General > Model Number. It's usually right there, but if you see a model number that starts with an A, you can tap on the model number to switch between the AXXXX number of the full model number. The replacement device can be new or refurbished from used, good parts, but often come with new cases/displays and always come with a new battery.

However, in my experience they'll usually bring out the "white box" replacement device and perhaps ask if the user would like to transfer the data from the exchanged device. It seems unusual that this was done in the back.
