Voice Isolation is very handy when you answer the phone using Bluetooth-connected AirPods or Made For iPhone (MFI) hearing aids. If Mic Mode on your iPhone is set to “Standard” (the default) then you’ll hear the person at the other end of the call just fine, but they will hear you voice either “broken up” or at least partly obscured by the ambient noise around you. Changing the Mic Mode to “Voice Isolation” should clear up your voice nicely.

However, the Mic Mode setting on iPhone only appears when you’re on a phone call. Although whichever setting you select will continue through subsequent phone calls.

Here is how to turn it on:

Don’t be using a bluetooth headset or MFI OTC hearing aid. I recommend turning Bluetooth off temporarily to be sure.

Start a phone call (to a family member or whoever won’t mind if you ask them to stay on the call for a bit while you try changing a setting or two on your iPhone:-)

Open Control Center:

A. By swiping down from the top right-hand corner of your screen if you have a Face ID iPhone. Or ..

B. By swiping up from the bottom right-hand corner of your screen if you have a Touch ID iPhone.

Then …

At the upper right-hand corner of Control Center, you should see “Mic Mode”; click on it.

Select Voice Isolation and close Control Center.

Close the phone call. Turn Bluetooth back on.

Test it by asking someone on a phone call with you if your voice has improved. On all subsequent calls (until you change Mic Mode, or possibly until a new iOS version comes along) your voice should sound much better at the other end. And that should be especially noticeable as you use AirPods or a MFI hearing aid.

[I only learned this from an Audiologist who fits MFI hearing aids.]
