iPod Classic not appearing in Finder, suddenly ejected

I've been having a similar problem to this thread: iPod Classic not registering on Finder co… - Apple Community. I'm using an early 2015 MacBook Air and a 2009 iPod Classic, and after I upgraded to Mojave last year iTunes would recognise the iPod, but then as the sync process started it would suddenly "disappear", and would no longer appear as a device or drive under Finder. I thought wiping the iPod content and starting again would solve the problem, but it didn't. I then recently upgraded to Monterey, hoping that the move from iTunes to Finder would help. But the iPod only appears as a USB device/drive (not twice as per the screenshots) and then suddenly disappears (again) when I try to copy music files to it. I'm reluctant at the moment to entirely wipe my iPod (as per this advice: https://methodshop.com/erase-ipod/), as I don't know if I'll be able to restore the software. Any advice appreciated.

The 336 pending sectors are areas of the drive that remain currently in use, but have been detected as unreliable. Those need to be converted into reallocations by deleting the content that is currently using them. This can be done by restoring, or reformatting the drive if a restore doesn't resolve things. You cannot expect to get normal operation while you have pending sectors.

this seems to have worked, although there's still some (hopefully cosmetic) issues.

I tried running Disk Utility > First Aid, after which it recognised the iPod (it appeared twice in Finder). I then restored the iPod, although twice it stayed at the 'your Mac is restoring your iPod's software' stage without concluding. Eventually after ejecting it and restarting the Macbook, it recognised the iPod and allowed me to sync my music collection. It then wouldn't let me eject the iPod, so I eventually had to force-eject it, but it seems to work fine.

See Corrupt iPod Classic - Apple Community. What are your HDD stats? Your device may disconnect if/when the computer realizes it cannot reliably transfer data.

I had a look at the linked discussion page and it didn't seem, based on that and a glance at my stats, that it's a HD corruption problem, but I could be interpreting them wrong. If it is a HD problem, at least I can give up trying to resurrect it and move on to a different mp3 player.
