Slow Transfer mode file moving between 2 silicon Macs

When transferring files via a Thunderbolt 3 cable between my MBP 2022 Silicon M2 and My Studio Pro M1 desktop computer in Transfer mode, the transfer rate is terribly slow. I expected much faster transfer rates between 2 Macs using thunderbolt3. Though it wouldn't transfer at ALL between My M1 and M2 Macs until I updated to Ventura V13.3. :-( Anyone else have any insights about this glacial transfer speed when using Transfer mode with the Silicon Macs?

I was using Target disk mode. (which used to cause the HD of one Mac to show up on the desktop of the other Mac, then you simply drag and drop). Apparently this has changed and now uses some sort of network sharing protocol which isn't nearly as convenient (nor fast) as Target Disk mode's drag-and-drop used to be. I was expecting a far higher thru-put to happen with Thunderbolt 4 connection. :-(

The ThunderBolt-3 connection itself can get up to nominal 2500 M Bytes/sec on an SSD drive in a ThunderBolt-3 enclosure. Mac-to-Mac over Thunderbolt should be comparable, but that is the fastest speed of the PIPE, not the complete chain of devices.

What make&model&type of drive are you using as the source drive, and where is it plugged in to the source Mac?

Actually I had exactly these kind of issues when transferring files from my old MacBook to my new one.

Turned out that Apple's SMB implementation is extremely slow when transferring multiple small files.

Workaround: Compress the files into one archive and transfer the archive!

I had to transfer 93k+ objects, yet only 5 GB. Estimation after starting was way over one hour. Compressing the files into one archive: 3.5 min, transfer a few seconds, decompressing on the target machine less than 2 min.
