If you are suing a VPN connection provided by your Institution or Company, you should ask them for their guidance.

If you are using a VPN you are installing yourself, you may be making a serious error in judgement. These first-few-hops VPNs add enormous complexity, punish performance, and do not provide any additional protection from attack. Some package are also very invasive and break into your encrypted connections to scan your incoming traffic for antique Windows virus patterns. They serve only to enrich the sellers.

Your queries to web servers are already protected over your local airwaves by Wi-Fi encryption, or are on private Ethernet cables. Your Router uses Network Address Transaltion and a state-wise Firewall to keep your computer from unsolicited access from the internet at large. Queries to web sites are encrypted with httpS: encryption certificates.

An added VPN has nothing additional to offer.
