- what macOS on the computer?
- What update are you trying to apply to the phone?
Is this the message you are seeing?:
If your Mac says that a software update is required to connect to iPhone or iPad - Apple Support
If so, that only patches iTunes (if running macOS 10.14 or older) to be compatible with newer iOS and iPadOS versions. It will NOT change the macOS version on your computer. I've applied it several times to my older Macs with no issues.
