External microphone on iPhone 12

I have bought an external microphone for my iPhone 12, but every time I try to plug it in and use it to record a video, the camera starts to bug and then (after 5 or 6 seconds) the video ends. It doesn't record anything.

I tried the microphone with other iPhones and it works, so it's a problem with my phone but I don't know what it is.

Thanks for the additional info. You mentioned earlier testing with another iPhones without any issues. Are those other iPhone also on iOS 16?


Speaking of iOS 16, the current latest version is iOS 16.4.1:

About iOS 16 Updates - Apple Support

If you're not on that version, go ahead and back up, then update your iPhone:

Update your iPhone or iPad - Apple Support


If everything is up to date, and you're still having issues, the next step is to contact the microphone manufacturer. You'll want to let them know what's happening, which iOS you're using, and verify it's compatible, or if there is a firmware update available.

Contact a third-party vendor - Apple Support

1. Does this only happen when the external microphone is connected, or does it happen at other times as well?

2. Do you receive any errors when this happens? If so, what does the error say?

3. Is this happening in the Apple Camera app, or another application?

4. Do you experience issues with other apps not working as expected when the external microphone is connected?

1. Close and reopen the app
Force the app to close. Then open the app to see if it works as expected.

Thank you for your answer.


  1. This problem happens only when the microphone is connected, otherwise the iPhone works well.
  2. I don’t receive any error, the camera just starts to lag and then the video stops automatically. When I try to play the video saved in my gallery, it’s just a black screen.
  3. It happens in the Apple camera app, I didn’t try in other apps.
  4. When the microphone is connected, other apps works well.
