There's no "memory effect" with lithium-ion batteries. Shallow discharge is actually better. What's probably best is that you avoid deep discharge. NiCads had problems with crystalline formation when they weren't fully depleted before they were recharged.

@y_p_w is correct. Avoid leaving the battery with 0% charge for any extended period of time as that can permanently damage the battery and may cause problems with being able to power on the Apple laptop or even begin charging again.


If you leave a laptop connected to the charger all the time, then you need to exercise the battery once in a while. If you are running macOS 10.15.x+ (fully patched) and allow the new macOS battery health management system to operate, then macOS will exercise the battery automatically. Other than these two edge cases, just use the laptop with a Lithium-ion battery how you wish.
