The field of view (FOV) for a camera is typically calculated based on the focal length of the lens and the size of the camera sensor. The FOV is the extent of the observable scene that is captured by the camera.

The FOV can be calculated using the following formula:

FOV = 2 * arctan( d / (2 * f) )

where:

  • FOV: the field of view angle in radians
  • d: the diagonal size of the camera sensor
  • f: the focal length of the lens

The diagonal size of the camera sensor can be calculated using the Pythagorean theorem, as follows:

d = sqrt( w^2 + h^2 )

where:

  • w: the width of the camera sensor
  • h: the height of the camera sensor

Note that the FOV angle calculated using the above formula is typically in radians. To convert it to degrees, you can multiply it by 180/π (approximately 57.3).
