Last iOS Update - Ringtone and Alert Volume

I am a nursing student so I rely on my alarm clock to get to clinical on time since it is a very strict requirement. After I downloaded the last iOS update on my iPhone I set up my alarm like as usual and it turns out that it was not even making my phone vibrate. I ended up waking up an hour late. This has gotten me in trouble with the strict policies of my nursing program. There is a big chance I will be dismissed from the program since this is not a credible excuse for them as it could see how they would believe I am making this up.

A day later, since I thought I might have done something wrong I set up my alarm and made sure it was set for the right time and my phone was not in ringer mode. I could hear sounds from apps, etc. Later on, I discovered that my 'ringtone and alert volume' on the settings had the sound turned all the way down. I never touch those settings and there were no changes in my phone other than my alarm not making a sound.

I need to find out of this issue was related to the update since this could be my only way to appeal my tardy on my program. Thank you!

Is it possible that you may have the Change with Buttons option in settings set to ON? If this is set to ON, then your volume buttons, not only control the speaker volume but also the Ringtone and Alert volume. If, for any reason, you lower the volume of the speaker with the volume button and forget about it, then your Alert and Ringtone volume will also be low/off.

Double check the setting by opening Settings ➡️ Sound & Haptics ➡️ Change with Buttons: Ensure that this is set to OFF and then use the slider to set the desired Ringtone and Alert volume. Now, your volume buttons will only adjust the speaker volume and not interfere with the Ringtone and Alert volumes.
