imac intell running mohave 10.14 load problems

can I repair my disk in recovery mode by typing in the right commands in the little box that appears?

iMac 21.5″, macOS 10.14

Once you have restarted your Mac in Recovery mode, you can use Disk Utility to repair your startup drive.

I will try this. its at a shop now and the tech wants to replace the hard drive. whatever. I'd rather not before I've tried to repair the disk. I had it in safe mode at home and now the tech is not able to get into recovery mode. I don't agree with his diagnosis. thanks
