FWIW, when you do get a monitor, toss the vendor supplied cable as they tend to be the cheapest cables they can get away with packaging with their product.

Instead, in the case of an HDMI cable, purchase an HDMI Certified cable. They will have package markings similar to this as an example:

Non-certified cables are a coin toss as to how well they will work.

If you intend to connect to one of the USB4/Thunderbolt ports. The best interface would be USB-C to DisplayPort cables. Again, only purchase certified cables. For DisplayPort certification they will have a working on the packaging similar to this:

Most any external Display will work with the Mac mini’s.

Yea’ Apple keeps moving the furniture around and hiding the earlier instructions.

To see the M1 click on “Select version” at the top of the article and change it to 2022 macOS Ventura or 2021 macOS Monterey.

Basically the connections and adapters are all the same.

I have two older 21.5” LG monitors that are no longer produced. One is connected to the HDMI port and the other is connected to a Thunderbolt/USB-C port using an aftermarket USB-C to HDMI adapter.

Probably not much help, but I have an older Dell 4K. Works fine either connect thunderbolt to DP or HDMI.

We have no problems running dual displays on our 2012, 2018 or 2020 M1 Mac mini’s.
