If I buy an apple tv can I add monthly apple care payments or do I have to buy the 2 year plan

It doesn't look like they offer a monthly plan for Apple TV AppleCare in the U.S. but the 3 year plan is $29. See: AppleCare Products - Apple TV - Apple

monthly applecare at education store We are buying an ipad pro at the education store and it appears there is not an option to pay for applecare + on a monthly basis. Does this mean the applecare+ is limited to 2 years and no more? If one pays by the month, can applecare + be extended beyond 2 years?
