I would like to back up my iphone to an external drive on my computer. The only information I have found is from 2011 so I need a more up to date answer, please
Back up through iTunes.
then, navigate to the backup folder and drag the backup to the external drive.
you may also be able to map/link the backup location to the external drive
You can connect an external drive to an iPhone, but you cannot save the backup to the external drive that is connected to the iPhone.
If you are backing up to a Mac or PC, you might be able to set up a symbolic link that would also save the backup to the external drive (connected to the Mac or PC).....not to the iPhone.
Whether or not you would be able to transfer the backup on the external back to the iPhone would be an open question. You would probably have to use a backup on the Mac or PC, or first copy the backup on the external back to the Mac or PC.
