If your AirPods are paired and working correctly the updates should happen automatically. The requirement is that the AirPods are in their charging case and connected to external charging power while within Bluetooth range to your iPhone. The phone should ideally have a WiFi connection to internet, particularly in your case where multiple updates might need to be stepped through.
I suspect the updates could be a little slow and you might need to leave the AirPods on charge overnight, near your iPhone. However, it won't do any harm to wait even if the AirPods don't complete updates for several weeks.
