Easiest way to update your AirPods is to have them plugged in and within Bluetooth range of your iPhone/iPad/Macbook. Additionally, the best way to update your AirPods with your MacBook would be to Plug your AirPods in dircetly into your Macbook. In a way this "force updates" your AirPods. It should only take about 10-15 minutes.
