Having exactly the same problem on my daughters iMac and again only after we updated to sonoma a while back. Does anyone have any ideas of how to fix it?

for more information: On keyboard viewer the fn button appears constantly on (outlined in red line)

Ive tried safe boot several times. Have also this evening restored sonoma 14.1.1. No improvement.

Keyboard works when I log in (typed password is accepted) but then (presumably after further startup files loaded the keyboard turns into a shortcut board and none of the original standard alphabet letters work. Press “e” get the emoji library. Press “a” and the sidebar opens. “Q” and notes opens. Have tried removing items from startup - no impact. Seems to be software rather than hardware (given keyboard works for initial password). All help gratefully received. Really pulling my hair out. Thanks

Check what shortcut is used for Emoji & Symbols by clicking the Edit menu in most apps. Here is mine showing fn-E:

Also what do you have at:  > System Settings > Keyboard > Keyboard Shortcuts > App Shortcuts. Open the disclosure triangle next to All Applications:

You can override the Emoji & Symbols shortcut by clicking the + button. Enter the name "Emoji & Symbols", then a different shortcut.

Use the same procedure for dictation using the name "Start Dictation..."

Another setting to check at  > System Settings > Keyboard. Change the setting "Press fn key to" to "Do Nothing". Your setting may say Globe key depending on your keyboard.

Is it possible that your Function/Globe key is stuck? This would allow typing to continue like normal until the "e" is pressed.

The name does have to be identical to the menu item: "Emoji & Symbols". I have seen other users have had the same problem, but no clear resolution in the follow up posts.

Another angle to see if the key is activated is to go to:  > System Settings > Keyboard > Edit (under Input Sources). On the next screen select "Show Input Menu in Menubar". With that in the menubar, select it and choose "Show Keyboard Viewer. Press and release the Globe key and see if the action is shown in the keyboard viewer. Also press the "e" key to see if only that key is highlighted red to indicated that it is pressed.

Hopefully you can find the solution to this problem and maybe benefit others as well.
