Missed calls show ”call failed” on Apple Watch

This has been a consistent problem on my a Apple Watch: whenever I miss a call, the name of the person who called is displayed all over the display followed by a “call failed” message. This message does not disappear until I press a “x” button which is also displayed or a button to call the person. How do I make this disappear?

Others don’t get this so it must be a feature or software issue 🤷‍♂️.

Software is a possibility but I think it is more likely to be something in Settings. There are a few obvious things to check or test.

Question: We can't see if your Apple Watch is the Cellular version, but if it is... Do you have the same notification problem when using standalone cellular, and also when working through the iPhone?

  • Make sure your iPhone and Apple Watch are both using the latest software. Today (April 2023) the current versions for most devices are iOS 16.4.1 and WatchOS 9.4 (som older models may not support latest software)
  • Check the settings for Notifications (Phone app) in your iPhone, Watch App, and in the watch itself. It might be worth some experiments for notification settings.
  • Try changing the iPhone's settings for notifications and alerts in the phone app, just in case there is something strange happening to mirror a buggy notification to your Apple Watch.
  • I notice your watch is using non-English language. Make sure language, region, etc are matching in both devices. It shouldn't make a difference, but too easy just to check!
  • Try restarting both the iPhone and the Apple Watch. They are both computers, so the universal fix is REBOOT! I recommend the Forced Restart method in both devices (quick and always effective).
