iTunes Match streaming fails on MBP

I've had iTunes Match for many years. However, in recent months I've found that when playing a matched song on my MacBook Pro, the Music app only downloads the first few seconds of the song. It then gets stuck (as if I have a poor internet connection) and then skips to the next track (which then does the same). If I click to download the song to my drive, it only downloads the same few seconds. I am using Music 1.3.4.56 on a 13" M2 MBP running OS 13.3.1.

This is definitely not my internet connection, as other 'bandwidth heavy' apps like Netflix and YouTube all run fine, and the Music app on my iPhone X (iOS 16.4.1) can play the same matched song without problems, on the same wifi network just inches away from my MBP.

Signing out of my iTunes account works (most of the time) but is a real pain, and the problem always returns.

Hi DrJonJ,

A few things you can check or try regarding this concern are:

1) Ensure your computer is properly authorized and remove devices that should not be authorized for your account.Authorize or deauthorize your computer for iTunes Store purchases covers those steps, and removing devices you don't have access to requires removing all authorized devices then reauthorizing the appropriate ones.

2) If you are an Apple Music subscriber check the settings for Listen to lossless audio in Music on Mac and Listen to spatial audio in Dolby Atmos in Music on Mac to see if either are in effect, and if changing those settings impacts the behavior you're experiencing.

3) Test the playback in safe mode. How to use safe mode on your Mac explains not only how to boot your Mac into safe mode for this test, but also includes subsequent steps based on the test results. As you mention signing out and back in temporarily helps, trying in a new user account may be a suitable test as well, also mentioned in that article.

Regards.
