iPhone and iPad showing unread messages even though I’m not seeing any unread message

You can power off your phone wait one minute then turn it back on . You might have some hidden so check your hidden messages. Call support if either is not working.

This totally worked for me!! Ask Siri to read your messages.

When this happens I click on Deleted Messages, click on one and hit Recover. Then go back into All Messages, delete the one you just recovered and this should remove the notification on the icon. Just be sure to have some deleted ones available and don’t delete them all.

My iPhone screen did not have a Filters option. By searching elsewhere, I found that you can go into settings and enable the option to "Filter Unknown Senders". My screen now looks like the above screen. Unfortunately I still have hundreds of unread messages that "Read All" doesn't clear. The only way I've found is listening to Siri read them for hours on end.

This was driving me crazy‼️ I selected all messages older than two years and went through the rest one by one and couldn’t find any unread.

Used your “hey Siri” solution and now all is good 🙌🏼

Go to Settings ➡️ Notifications ➡️ scroll to Messages ➡️ Notification Grouping ➡️ Off

This is what I did but I don’t really understand the “group” aspect of it. I guess I could look into it 🙃

This worked. Siri went and read 4 random messages and marked them as read. When I couldn't see anything as unread.

Not as helpful though, when you suddenly have 400+ unread messages that don't show up anywhere...I've already spent over an hour having Siri read the messages to get down to 300. It's painful. It's weird too, because they just came up all of a sudden and are from at least a year ago.

Confirming that having Siri read those messages aloud also worked for me! Happy New Year!

I haven’t found success using that technique on iPad. There’s no filter option. Pics of what I see when I open messages below.

So you have to read each email of e very device for it to show as "read"???

that makes no sense, and is not what I would call "syncing"

AHHH IT WORKED! Thank you so much! I’ve had unread messages that were showing for months but I could never find where they were to mark them as read. I would have never thought to tell Siri to read my messages

Brilliant. This has been bothering me for months. Never thought of doing this. Thank you. I wish there was a way to tip. $10 bucks is a small price to pay for that annoying unread icon to finally be gone. You're a legend.
