How can I make my external hard drive work on my Mac

Hi,

I have an issue with my external hard drive to work on my Mac. The hard drive is actually a storage from a Windows laptop.

When I switched to Mac, I realised that I can no longer use the drive properly. I can connect, eject and view the files on the drive just fine. But it does not work when I want to transfer a file/folder from the hard drive on my Mac and vice versa.

I am guessing this could be due to a compatibility issue between Mac and Windows? So I want to ask if anyone here knows how to fix this? The external hard drive has huge storage, so it will be great to be able to use it well to transfer and save files to and fro easily using my Mac. Any help is appreciated. Thank you :)

It is likely that the external drive is formatted as NTFS and macOS does not have native support to write to a drive in that format.

The options are:

  1. Reformat the drive to a GUID partition scheme with either macOS Extended or APFS. his of course will destroy any data on the drive.
  2. Obtain a third party NTFS driver either free or purchase. Google NTFS drivers for macOS Ventura.
