permissions on copied files with OS Venture

I've recently upgraded my 2017 iMac desktop to OS Ventura and I've been encountering problems with the OS changing file permissions. I seem to have it under control on the desktop, but when I back-up files to my 2014 MacBook Pro running OS Mojave it changes the permissions on some files so that I can't open them on my laptop. I can go into the info panel and change the permissions back, but it's a PITA to have to do that. I have a similar problem with some files copied from the laptop to the desktop. Permissions seem to be an issue with Ventura. Am I missing a setting some where?

I finally figured out what the issue was: I was signing in to my laptop from my desktop as a guest and so it wasn't transferring permissions between the computers. For whatever reason, this hadn't been an issue before I upgraded to Ventura. Now I just have to take the extra step of signing in as the owner (me) and entering the password and everybody is happy. Thanks for your insights.

You need to search for a mask in UNIX and weather can be changed in macOS.

Did the dropbox not change the permissions for the user you dropped it on? I thought it used to do that, but maybe it never did.

It’s not new. It’s been there since 2001 with the release of OS X.

I run automated sync's between my desktop and my laptop so that I can work from home and keep the files on each computer up to date.

That’s what the cloud is for.

It’s quite possible it hasn’t been a problem because the two user’s UID’s were the same and now are not.

macOS starts with 501 for the first user and increments that as users are added.

Thanks for the info, Barney. Can you tell me, is there a way to change the default permissions for new files? Having to run files through the Drop Box folder doesn't seem all that much less effort than changing them in the info box. (Is Drop Box new to Ventura; I've never encountered it before. What's it's purpose?) I run automated sync's between my desktop and my laptop so that I can work from home and keep the files on each computer up to date. I've done this for probably 20 years and it's never been an issue. I'm wondering if syncing through the cloud might be the answer. Any idea if that would bypass the permissions issue?
