Thunderbolt 3 Compatibility with USB 3.2 Protocols.

I have a MacBook Pro 16" (2019) with a i9 processor and thunderbolt 3 ports. Anybody know if this are fully compatible with USB 3.2 Gen2x2 or with what USB Protocols? I want to purchase some news SSD's but I doubt between thunderbolts version or USB versions of the SSD option, and also I'm thinking in the futureproof of my purchase. Thanks!

MacBook Pro 16″, macOS 13.3

According to Apple's own technical specifications, this laptop supports:

* USB 3.1 Gen 2 (up to 10Gb/s)

MacBook Pro (16-inch, 2019) - Technical Specifications

If you are going to choose USB3 devices, I highly recommend they also support the UASP protocol is it will help with data transfers. If you utilize any adapters, hubs, or docks, then make sure they also support the UASP protocol since every device in a direct link from the SSD to the laptop must support UASP as well. Plus if you connect any USB 1/2 items to a hub/dock, then these slower devices will not interfere with the USB3 transfers.

USB devices are much more common and are usually a lot less expensive than a device supporting the Thunderbolt protocol. Part of the decision depends on finances as well as how you will be utilizing the drive....some workloads may benefit from a Thunderbolt drive.

FYI, USB-C connectors & cables with a device does not mean the device supports the Thunderbolt protocol. USB-C is a connector type. Both Thunderbolt 3/4 and USB 3/4 utilize a USB-C connector. Make sure to check the product technical specifications and/or data sheets to confirm which protocols the device supports. If it is not clear, then most likely the device only supports the USB protocol.
