I am using it now. It gets transported nearly every single day in a generic soft case. Other than that I don't exercise any particular care with it.

Yes. Macs dissipate heat through their cases. Anything that impedes that heat dissipation will increase internal temperatures, which will in turn cause it to reduce its performance.
There are many reasons to avoid their use.

Mac uses the chassis for heat dissipation. Vented hard shells—any cases that doesn’t get removed while the Mac is in use—may or may not reduce performance. Anything that reduces heat dissipation will.
Complicating all this, I’ve had protective cases that admitted grit, and the results chewed up the finish.
Nowadays, I mostly use sleeves and satchels. Or an iPad, when I need mobility.
You could say that even considering the fact that M1 Air has no vents ?
Especially since they have no vents.
That's what "dissipate heat through their cases" means.
