I just got off the phone with Apple support .After doing some troubleshooting she could see that safari was not updating some apps because of the age of my computer .(looks like we have the same i Mac) She walked me through changing my browser to Google Chrome. After doing that I can now open the app that I needed. I was nervous calling Apple Support but I was really pleased with the support and patience that I received.

... I’m just overly concerned about security.

I don't blame you, and there is no doubt Safari is the safer choice from that perspective

Provided you follow the principles I describe in Effective defenses against malware and other threats - Apple Community, you can confidently use either or both of those alternative browsers. The nature of threats today is such that they primarily rely upon deception to ultimately succeed in defrauding you or stealing your personal data. That would remain so even if you were using the latest Mac incorporating the latest security features.
