Startup control - Button press only

How do I keep my Macbook Pro from starting up when I open it? I can't find the setting in the control panel.

Whenever I open the display to make sure the laptop is off - it will start up if it's off. I need to be able to confirm it's off and not have to wait for it to startup just to shut it back down.

Thank you.

If it's one of the new Apple silicon versions like mine (MBP 14" M1 2021) - you Shutdown from Apple logo menu (top left menu bar) and then close lid. When you open lid it will start up again. However....... as your machine shuts down, watch the keyboard background lights switch off and when they do shut lid and feel secure everything is good.

I don't think there is another way of doing this but willing to learn if someone adds something here

Hope this helps

You can't change that. Provide Apple feedback for features you want changed or added:

I've got more than one apple laptop so I may leave one off or in standby for a few days and forget which state it's in. The only way to know is to open it up and see. Ever since getting M1 laptops they turn on when checking/opening, which is really frustrating.

I really wish there was something in the system settings to set startup behavior. I haven't been able to find a setting.

If your MBP has been fully shut down you will open lid and the machine will load up and then you can log in. If your MBP lid was just closed without instigating the shut down procedure I mentioned earlier, then it will wake up ready for you to add your password or touch ID or your Apple watch (depending on your preference) and away you go.

Coming from my old MBP mid 2012 with Catalina this process felt “different” but its second nature now. I just shut lid during day to sleep if I take break - then shut down at end of day.

If its a deal breaker - perhaps you could contact Apple?

Regards
