fixing natural scrolling

Please could you recommend a reasonable course of action to get so called "Natural scrolling" setting fixed in macOS and ipadOS?

Any of the following would solve the problem:

  • remember settings per input device
  • have separate "natural scrolling" for mouse and trackpad (not great, but would do)
  • have separate "invert vertical scrolling" for scrollwheel and touch surface (this is what I understand most people are having issue with, me included)
  • invert current behaviour of "natural scrolling" for scroll wheel devices (this would undo the damage done by introducing this feature in the first place)

Current workarounds involve installing third party apps and granting them very broad access. This is highly undesirable.

How would you recommend to act to get this fixed in operating system? Thanks!

You are absolutely right! There are many more of them (which indirectly points to this being a real issue for many).

However, I could not find any of these apps in appstore. And, since they require Accessibility permissions (that means, among other things, being able to capture and spoof keyboard input), this seems like a huge security risk just to use input device with a scrollwheel.

I think it would be preferable to coerce apple into fixing this issue, so that people would not be forced to install such apps in the first place. Do you have any suggestions how to achieve that?

FWIW, being in the App Store or not is not a guarantee of quality or safety (or lack thereof).

It just means that the developer was able to meet Apple's criteria for allowing it.

When even "cleanmymac" (which is also know around here as "brickmymac") is in the App Store...

On the other hand, Etrecheck, an invaluable diagnostic tool that has helped users help others probably thousands of times, is not. It is totally safe, does not modify your system in any way (unlike brickmymac) and yet I have seen many a user who had installed bmm but was suspicious of Etrecheck...

Any application that needs to access some specific resources can only do so if YOU, the user, allows. That is a security feature of macOS. Even accessing the microphone requires your permission. Of course an application like ScrollReverser will need permission to "control your computer". That is a good thing.

Whether you choose to trust an application is your call, obviously. I just wanted to stress the point that the notion of "in the App Store equals 'safe'" is misguided.
